In October 2017, when one of my friends told me about his internship with IAESTE in Germany, I became eager to spend my internship abroad. In the beginning of 2018, IAESTE Iran informed me that I have been accepted by IAESTE Croatia. The moment I heard this, I had no sense of happiness because I would prefer to be accepted in a more famous country, but after consulting with my professors, friends and family, I decided to spend my internship in Croatia.
Before traveling to Croatia, the process of getting visa and leaving my country was really annoying and time-consuming. Due to my Iranian nationality, I also encountered problems in opening a bank account in Croatia and participating in my company’s scientific visits. In spite of all these mentioned issues, I not only do not regret my decision, but also I think I got one of the best decisions in my study period. Because during my internship I earned precious experience with working in a European standard-based company for almost three months.
I also got familiar with the process of executing projects in Europe and learnt some engineering points that I could not learn them theoretically at university. Additionally now I can compare the knowledge level of myself as a person who has studied at one of the top universities in Iran with those who have studied in European universities. Another beneficial point was that my company’s field of expertise was in water and environmental engineering, which is also my interest and my favorite program for postgraduate studies. Therefore now I have a better vision to choose a suitable master program for myself.
In my opinion the most important achievement of this opportunity is that now I have higher self-confidence and feel more independent. I owe this achievement to this challenge that it was first time I was living alone in a foreign country for three months away from my family and friends.
My stay in Croatia passed very fast with pleasant memories. Because people around me whether from IAESTE Zagreb or my Company were very kind and hospitable and whenever I asked for their help they did not hesitate to help me. I never felt homesick because they always treated me like a member of their own family. Now I can say that I have very good friends internationally.
Fortunately, I had this chance to travel through Croatia at weekends. So I visited some cities and towns in Croatia that they were amazing and I was really mesmerized by nature and monuments of Croatia.
Beside of all mentioned advantages of this program, during my internship I tried to teach my colleagues and friends about culture and history of Iran and I invited them to visit Iran. Now few of them are so interested that they are planning to visit Iran next year.
Totally, I am so glad that I had this opportunity to spend my internship in a foreign country. Now I feel that I am more experienced with an enriched CV. I highly recommend Iranian students to apply for internship in IAESTE Iran because that is what other students all over the world do: “gaining international experience”.
